How hard is the water in Folsom?

Folsom publishes hardness data, but the most useful answer still starts with the supplier serving your address and the water at your home.

What Folsom reports

The City of Folsom’s published water-quality information has described municipal water as slightly to moderately hard. Its 2023 report listed hardness ranging from 22 to 33 mg/L for the City of Folsom system, with an average of 28 mg/L. The same report separately listed Ashland-system results. Those figures describe sampled source or system water; they are not a measurement from every household faucet.

Hardness is mainly a measure of dissolved calcium and magnesium. It is different from chlorine residual, sediment, total dissolved solids, or a specific contaminant. A chlorine taste does not prove hard water, and white spotting alone does not identify every substance in a deposit.

Why two Folsom homes can feel different

Supply boundaries, plumbing, hot-water equipment, evaporation, and cleaning habits can all affect what a homeowner notices. The utility report gives a reliable regional starting point, while an address-specific conversation helps separate hardness concerns from taste, odor, sediment, or drinking-water priorities.

What a softener does

A water softener is designed to address hardness minerals through ion exchange. Whole-home carbon filtration addresses a different job, often including chlorine-related taste and odor when the equipment is appropriately selected. Reverse osmosis is a separate point-of-use process for drinking and cooking water. Family First Water’s complete installation includes whole-home filtration and softening together, plus under-sink reverse osmosis and a dedicated faucet.
