Start with the scope, not a teaser price
A quote can describe a basic softener, a whole-home package, or a system that also includes drinking-water treatment. Those are not equivalent. Family First Water installs a complete package with whole-home filtration and softening, plus under-sink reverse osmosis and a dedicated drinking-water faucet. The written quote should show what equipment and installation work are included.
For Sacramento homes, source water matters. The City of Sacramento’s 2025 Consumer Confidence Report lists an average hardness of 83 mg/L, while results differ among the American River plant, Sacramento River plant, and groundwater sources. That variation is one reason a city name or ZIP code is not enough to size or price a system.
What can change the installed price?
- Household demand: the number of people, bathrooms, and typical water use affect system sizing.
- Measured hardness: softener capacity and regeneration settings should reflect the water serving the home.
- Plumbing access: the location of the water main, drain, power, and available equipment space can change installation labor.
- Included treatment: carbon filtration, softening, kitchen reverse osmosis, a faucet, and professional installation should be identified separately enough to understand the total package.
- Existing conditions: older plumbing, unusual routing, or corrective work may affect the final scope.
Budget for ownership, too
The purchase price is only part of the comparison. Ask about salt, filter cartridges, membrane or media service, expected water use during regeneration, and the service schedule for the exact equipment. Salt use varies with household demand, measured hardness, and the system’s settings.
Compare the written warranty as part of the complete quote. Review which equipment and components are covered, whether labor or consumables are included, and what maintenance requirements or exclusions apply.
How to get a useful quote
Bring the name of the utility from your water bill, note any scale or spotting you see, and identify where the water line enters the home. A complimentary in-home water test and installation review gives the quote the address-specific context that an online price range cannot. See our Sacramento installation and local service details.
